Contradiction between Principle and Practice

My memoir is a record of the truth

I came to know Sun Myung Moon in the Heungnam Prison Camp and lived together with him for one year and six months. When the Korean War broke out and he was released from prison, the two of us [met up in Pyongyang] and together fled south over a period of two months, traveling through Seoul and on down to Busan.

For a time I stayed in Gyeongju, while Sun Myung Moon remained in Busan.

After we eventually reunited, I again heard from him the principles concerning the history of the creation of this world, the cause of the Fall, and the principle of restoring this world and returning it to the original purpose of creation, namely a clean world saved by God.

Under the name of the True Parents, the Second Coming Messiah who is the central figure of the Principle, the Unification Church has now spread to more than one hundred countries around the world. Selecting one person to become Eve, the “True mother”, they carried out the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” (formal marriage) and eventually had fourteen children.

Furthermore, they are attempting to establish a hereditary system by designating the first son as the successor to the father, Sun Myung Moon.

Sun Myung Moon has been widely introduced by scholars and similar figures from many countries. There are even books that seem to revere him as a great person. I have read almost all of such books, but these works do not concretely describe through what processes Sun Myung Moon has pursued his purposes and practices up to the present time.

They merely record superficial phenomena, consisting only of outward formality.
I do not wish to criticize what is written in those books.

However, I want to firmly state that what I have written in this book is a faithful record of the facts, exactly as they were, based on what I personally heard and witnessed while being together with Sun Myung Moon and acting alongside him.

The “Principle” that Sun Myung Moon would tell me whenever he had time in the Heungnam Prison Camp was later written down as a manuscript at the Sujeong Church in Busan. This became the Original Principle manuscript.

(It was written in pencil on paper and was kept by Cheong Seon-ok, who was then in Daegu. While I was at Seojin Mine, Park Ae-ja brought it to me. I copied it into a notebook at that time, and I still have it today.)

Based on this Original Principle manuscript, Eu Hyo-won, a man of exceptional intellect, wrote Explanation of the Principle (Wonri Haeseol).

These two texts, the Original Principle manuscript and the Explanation of the Principle, became the foundation of the Unification Church and the basis upon which Sun Myung Moon advanced into more than one hundred countries worldwide. Since it is not possible to quote these two works in full, I will first provide a summary.

152

Unsuspecting followers who do not know anything

However, within Explanation of the Principle there are contradictions between the Principle itself and its actual practice. I will therefore point out only a few key issues.

Every nation has myths at the beginning of its history. Korea and the Korean Peninsula have founding myths centered on Dangun. Japan has Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. China has the eleven virtuous royal brothers.

Yet the Sun Myung Moon whom I followed claimed not to be the founder of a single nation, but the Second Coming Messiah of the entire world. Among the many books published to date, some even describe Sun Myung Moon as a savior. He insists that he seeks to unify the world in order to save it.

However, the Second Coming Messiah whom I believed in seems, as his scale and influence have grown, to exhibit an ever-increasing contradiction between his principles and his actual practices. What am I to make of this feeling?

He is far too different from Jesus, who died on the cross two thousand years ago.

Sun Myung Moon is revered as the Third Adam and the True Parent not only by members of the Unification Church but also by people throughout the world, and the movement has spread to more than one hundred countries.

However, even after becoming believers of the Unification Church, (called “members”) there is absolutely no change in their lives compared to when they were living in the satanic world. Rather, some have become worse off, and some have even met tragic, screaming deaths.

I have continuously harbored doubts about this point.

Among the many publications related to the Unification Church, those that I have actually read contain nothing more than surface-level statements such as: the Unification Church is a church of this outline, and its leader Sun Myung Moon is the Second Coming Messiah who appears in the doctrine called the Principle.

Therefore, the real question comes down to how much Sun Myung Moon is actually fulfilling the role of the Second Coming Messiah. Is he truly saving this world as a savior?

Yet the shameless Sun Myung Moon has sacrificed many people up to the present day, and he is still attempting to continue to sacrifice people even now. For that reason, I came to believe that I could no longer remain silent and simply watch, and so I decided to write this book.

Unification Church believers who know nothing are still, even now, in more than one hundred countries, thinking of Sun Myung Moon as the “True Father” and calling Hak-ja Han the “True Mother”, praying day after day for the unification of this world.

I too was one of the members who waited, believing that Sun Myung Moon would become the true Second Coming Messiah and save this world.

154

What kind of messiah is Sun Myung Moon!

However, if Sun Myung Moon is not the Second Coming Messiah, and if things are as written in Revelation chapter 20, I do not know how we are supposed to think about this.

Hak-ja Han before the 1960 marriage

And if Sun Myung Moon truly is the Second Coming Messiah, and if he held the Marriage Supper of the Lamb with the true bride, became the True Parent, and fathered fourteen children, then why is it that as many as two of the children born from the True Parents have already died? [Hye-jin in 1964, Heung-jin in a traffic accident in 1984 and later Young-jin died by suicide in 1999.]

Among the three children born from other women [Choi Seon-gil, unknown mother of Dong-sook, Kim Myung-hee] and later officially registered by Moon, one also died in an accident on a train [Hee-jin Moon in 1969 who was the son of Kim Myung-hee].

In Revelation chapter 21, verse 4, it is written: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”

If Sun Myung Moon is the Second Coming Messiah, even though the date for holding the Marriage Supper of the Lamb according to the principle of restoration and for liberating everything in this world had already been set [1960], why is this world still exactly the same?

If the root of original sin was completely eliminated and he became the True Parent through the ritual of restoration, why is it that his sinless children are dying?

And among those descendants, why are there some who cause disgraceful scandals [Hyo-jin Moon] and spread unpleasant rumors?

I want to clarify what Sun Myung Moon has done through original sin, and how he has done it.
Did he practice according to the Principle?

Sun Myung Moon’s future is a matter that only God can decide.

I merely intend to write about the facts as they were during the time when I lived together with him and witnessed the process of practicing the principles he himself proclaimed.

If we explain restoration, because the archangel Lucifer had sexual relations with Eve and took her chastity before she had matured, it is necessary to carry out restoration in order to cleanse this sin.

To realize that restoration, first a person who, like God, has not been defiled must appear, and just as Lucifer had sexual relations with Eve, this person must have sexual relations with a woman like Eve, whose chastity was taken by Lucifer.

And because Lucifer mounted Eve and had sexual relations, in this present satanic world as well it has become the norm for the man to be on top during sex.

Therefore, when carrying out restoration, the man must be underneath and the woman must mount him and have sexual relations.

By this kind of reasoning, Sun Myung Moon continues to carry out the practice of restoration in this sexual position.

The Principle asserts unequivocally that the person who can restore others on an equal level with God is, needless to say, Sun Myung Moon.

Then why is Sun Myung Moon able to restore others from the position of being equal to the sinless God?

When one considers that Sun Myung Moon was born into an extremely ordinary family in this satanic world, it is something that cannot be accepted at all. There is not a single part of this that can be understood. I think it is something that needs to be reconsidered once more.

I lived together with Sun Myung Moon for one year and six months in the Heungnam prison camp. We often said to each other that one year and six months in that camp corresponded to about sixteen years of life in the outside world. This is a story I heard from him at that time.

When Sun Myung Moon was sixteen years old (1935), on the night before Easter, Jesus appeared to him in a dream and said that because he had been nailed to the cross and died without being able to accomplish what he had set out to do, Sun Myung Moon should complete that mission in his place.

Sun Myung Moon said that at first he was reluctant, but because the request was made several times, he accepted it. This being “asked” by Jesus later became, in the “Principle,” the practice of “restoration,” namely, having sex. Whether such a thing actually occurred is something only the person himself could know, so I do not know.

However, in this world there must be many people who claim to have dreamed of Jesus, and it is completely incomprehensible how a story of Jesus spoken in a dream could become the basis for such an absurd justification for sexual restoration.

Let’s review Mr. Moon doctrines again.

Teaching about Creation: God created the heavens and the earth and he created man by breathing the breath of life into his nostrils. God named him Adam, and he put the man in a garden in the east. Then God made woman from the rib of the man while he was sleeping. He named her Eve, and God let them rule the earth. They may eat any fruit in the garden, but God commanded that they must not eat the fruit that was in the middle of the garden. God warned them they would die if they ate the forbidden fruit.

Doctrine of the Fall of Man: When Eve became mature, God wanted to live in Adam and have sex with Eve as husband and wife. In this way sinless offspring could be brought forth and could prosper. The Archangel Lucifer knew God’s intention, so he seduced the immature Eve and had sex with her. After that Eve had sex with Adam, and the corrupted blood line of Satanic Lucifer began to spread.

Restoration Doctrine: In this way, the sexual intercourse of Eve with Lucifer corrupted humankind. After Eve and Adam ate the forbidden fruit, they had to hide their bodies with fig leaves, because of their feelings of shame.

The fig leaf story means that they had sex together. It is natural for people to hide any scar or injury and this story reveals the sin that they committed at that time. Now we have a problem to solve. How can we return to the state before the fall of Adam and Eve. God gave Eve pain in childbearing and gave Adam painful hard work. After that, Adam and Eve had two sons who became the forbears of humankind. Then Cain killed his younger brother, Abel. It became the first murder in the Garden of Eden.

How can we return to a sinless world? Mr. Moon had overcome a lot of difficulties to practice the pikareum return.

The strange relationship with Chong Deuk-eun (丁得恩)

❖ Photo added:

Chong Deuk-eun is standing in front of Sun Myung Moon in this photo taken in Busan in the summer of 1951. Kim Won-pil is on Moon’s right. Clayton Wadsworth, a US Army chaplain is on Moon’s left. Moon had worked with Chong Deuk-eun in Pyongyang in 1946, up until when she felt from God that she should separate from Moon. She then moved to Mount Samgak near Seoul in February 1947. Moon asked her to return in 40 days, but she decided not to. She had her own group of followers and her own set of teachings which she dictated to a follower in 1947. They were later published in a book, The Principle of Life. Moon took about 17 points of her theology: the four position foundation; the three stages of growth and her teaching about the fall and about Abraham’s offering failure, etc. They later appeared in the 1957 Divine Principle written by Eu Hyo-won who had a copy of her (then unpublished) book on his desk as he was writing the DP. Lee Yo-han was Chong’s assistant pastor and had heard about Moon from Chong in the late 1940s. In 1951 he was in Busan; he left her and joined Moon. Chong Deuk-eun visited Moon in Busan two or three times in 1951. They had loud arguments.

Further information about Chong Deuk-eun can be found HERE

On July 4, 1955 (Showa 30), when Sun Myung Moon and others were arrested and detained in the holding cells of the Jungbu Police Station, Chong Deuk-eun from the Pyongyang days came to see me and said that she would like me to come to her house.

(Note: This old woman, too, is another strange figure; although it will be a bit long, please read carefully.)

At that time, I myself happened to want to hear about Sun Myung Moon’s Pyongyang-period affairs, and while I was looking for Kim Chong-hwa, I decided to go as far as the house where Chong Deuk-eun was living.

Chong Deuk-eun, who was fifty years old, was renting and living in a small house in Wonhyo-ro 3-ga. I stayed together there for one week. During that time, I heard about the mysterious(?) life she had shared with Sun Myung Moon after he arrived in Pyongyang from Seoul.

Chong Deuk-eun [said she] had no connection at all with Pastor Lee Ung-do, who had once flourished in Pyeonganbuk-do in the north, nor with Hwang Guk-ju, and she also had no connection with Bokjung-gyo.

She did, however, believe in Christianity, and she said that on June 6, 1946, she received a revelation from heaven.
The content of it was that at that moment a young man was crossing the 38th parallel and heading toward Pyongyang with a single bag on his back. That young man was someone whom God had sent into this world with an important mission.

And it was said that because that person was heading toward Pyongyang, she must go out and receive him.

Chong Deuk-eun hurriedly went south to look, and in a place called Sadong she saw a young man wearing shabby clothes and carrying a single knapsack coming toward her. That was Sun Myung Moon (at that time, Moon Yong-myung).

Chong Deuk-eun went forward to him, greeted him, and then guided him to her home. Chong Deuk-eun’s residence was below Mansudae.

After bringing Sun Myung Moon there, Chong Deuk-eun explained that she had received a revelation, that she knew he was coming, and that she had gone out to welcome him.

Furthermore, Chong Deuk-eun said that because she had been acknowledged by Jehovah as the Holy Mother, if she had sexual relations with Sun Myung Moon, Sun Myung Moon would come to stand in a position equal to God and would thereby be able to restore women who were in the position of fallen couples.

And Sun Myung Moon went underneath, while Chong Deuk-eun mounted on top, and they had sex three times: for growth, formation, and completion.

The practice formula and method of restoration are strikingly similar to Sun Myung Moon’s Principle.

With the holy Chong Deuk-eun having carried out restoration in place of the Virgin Mary, Sun Myung Moon became, like a complete God, without sin—

Chong Deuk-eun says that because she had sex with Jehovah in a dream, she herself is the Holy Mother.

It is an extremely well-constructed story, but at the time, I, who stood like one of Sun Myung Moon’s right hand men, could only be astonished and moved.

However, now, thinking about it calmly once again, it is impossible to accept this: at a time when the principles of creation, fall, and restoration had not yet even been completed, and when the Principle itself was not yet known, Chong Deuk-eun, who was meeting Sun Myung Moon for the first time, could not possibly have done this.

Judging from the circumstances before and after, it seems that the two did have a physical relationship, but I now believe that this was a fabricated story forcibly patched together afterward.

One reason for this is that Sun Myung Moon’s behavior around the time he went to Pyongyang was chaotic and ignored the Principle altogether. Perhaps he was desperate to stabilize his livelihood, but at that time (and afterward as well), were not his only weapons an incomplete and bizarre theory of the Principle, and sexual advances toward the women who flocked to him after falling for it?

Even granting a hundred steps, if this had really been true, why did the printed materials of the Unification Church not write even a single line about this (epoch-making event of Chong Deuk-eun)?

[Moon had spent six months with Kim Baek-moon from about November 1945 to June 1946 and Kim taught and practiced pikareum. Chong was about fifty years old and had already developed a theology of her own. Other sources mention she may have had a connection with Hwang Guk-ju who had a church close by in Pyongyang.]

159

Sex-based proselytizing naturally led to arrests

Let us continue with the story of the Pyongyang period.

After this, Sun Myung Moon moved to the house of Na Choe-seop, and then next went to the home of Cheong Myeong-seon 鄭明先 and Kim Chong-hwa 金鍾和 in Gyeongchang-ri, where worship services were held. Because of various conflicts with Chi Seung-do, Ok Se-hyun, and others with whom there had already been sexual relationships, Chong Deuk-eun became independent and was holding worship services separately, gathering other believers.

Here, too, various problems arose.

The content was that because the female believers were each having sex with Sun Myung Moon, their claims became entangled and confused, with each insisting that she alone was the sacred mother who had “given rebirth to” Sun Myung Moon (spiritually given birth to him in this world).

In short, it was said that the women believers, by having sex with Sun Myung Moon, had given Sun Myung Moon the qualification to carry out restoration.

As has already been made clear, afterward Sun Myung Moon lived together with the married woman Kim Chong-hwa at Kim Chong-hwa’s house, even though her husband Cheong Myeong-seon and their children were present.

And, for whatever reason, Moon caused a disturbance by using the pretext of the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” to claim that he was marrying that married woman, Kim Chong-hwa, and as a result he was arrested by the police and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the crime of disturbing social order (社會秩序紊亂罪), serving his term in Heungnam prison.

There, Sun Myung Moon was living together with me, and regarding this matter, the publications of the Unification Church write as follows: Sun Myung Moon, who was completely without sin, was imprisoned.

The reason, they say, was that due to denunciations by established Christian denominations and the Communist Party’s policy of eradicating religion, he was arrested by the Ministry of the Interior and received a five-year sentence at trial.

That this is completely false, I believe readers will understand.

If at that time the Communist Party had truly been carrying out a policy of eradicating religion, the established Christian denominations would not have had any leeway to feel envy.

And Ok Se-hyun’s husband, Woo Ha-seop, was at that time a respected elder in Pyongyang’s Jangdaehyeon Church.

Moreover, three months earlier, in August 1946, Sun Myung Moon had already been arrested by the North Korean police and was only barely released after three months.

The Unification Church also claims that this, too, was caused by resentment and jealousy from pastors who had lost believers and therefore reported him, but it was the consequence of excessive sexual proselytizing.

In this book, I have written about the path I walked together with Sun Myung Moon and the events that occurred, centered on southern Korea (Busan, Daegu, Seoul), but already in the Pyongyang period Sun Myung Moon had made numerous women into believers through sex, having them offer their bodies and remain devoted.

And he likewise lured those women with the theory of the six Marys, extracting their bodies and their money and valuables.

162

Sex, greed and money

“Steal your husband’s money and bring it”

On July 4, 1955, Sun Myung Moon was arrested by the Seoul city police. [On September 22, he was sentenced to two years in jail. Other leaders were also sentenced. However, after Oh Yeong-choon had raised enough money and paid it to certain officials, Moon] was acquitted [at a short hearing] and released [after dark on October 4].

Regarding this as well, the Unification Church advertises that an innocent person was arrested, but that afterward the truth was revealed and he was released.

I, who was together with Sun Myung Moon from morning until night at that time, know the circumstances and facts better than anyone.

Sun Myung Moon actually committed many different crimes, but because of our quick countermeasures, because we did not respond honestly to police questioning, and because we matched our stories afterward through perjury and lies, no decisive evidence that could be used was produced, and as a result he was acquitted and released.

The Unification Church conceals this fact, but it is certain, because I myself committed perjury, ran around working to align the believers’ statements, and carried out the destruction of evidence.

To speak frankly, when we believed him to be the Second Coming, how could I, without permission, arbitrarily raise the age of the man supposed to be the Second Coming? That is something unthinkable.

After discussing it with the Second Coming Messiah, Moon, and with his approval, his age was falsely raised, and thus the Second National Service was evaded.

To give a concrete example, though there are mountains of them: for instance, he deceived a married woman named Kim Soon-cheol by saying that because he was the Second Coming Messiah, if she restored herself through him, she too would become one of the Six Marys, a Mary of Jesus, and then he had sex with her.

That is a fine case of adultery.

Also, although Satan rules this world, all the property of this world originally belongs to God, so even what Satan is using, the husband’s money and the property in the house, must all be stolen and offered to me as donations.

By doing so, this world will become an ideal world, and God will give blessings many thousands of times over.

Believing this story, Kim Soon-cheol kept bringing things and offering them.
At one time, being forced by Sun Myung Moon, she pulled out money amounting to 15,000 US dollars at that time from the house, and with that money let Sun Myung Moon enjoy himself freely for two months.

At last her husband also became angry and was searching everywhere using every means.

That is an excellent accomplice to theft. How could this possibly not be a crime?

Because the husbands did not tell the police such things and did not file charges for adultery, it was endured. All of the husbands of the other Marys did the same.

He also told their virgin daughters that if they became his wives they would become the true mother of the world, made them believe this, and deceived them into having sex.

By such methods, the female university students named Kim Myung-hee and Choi Soon-hwa were also deceived and had sex with Sun Myung Moon.

After falling into pleasure and, using marriage [Marriage Supper of the Lamb] as a pretext, violating pure virgins one after another, how could it be that Sun Myung Moon committed no crime?

The Unification Church ought to consider the tearful feelings of its members.

164

Why do innocent [sinless] children of the messiah die!

If Sun Myung Moon claims to be the Returning Messiah, it is utterly incomprehensible to me that he was imprisoned in an American penitentiary on charges of [document forgery and] tax evasion.

In Revelation 21:3–4 it is written that God will dwell with people, and they will be God’s people, and God Himself will be with them and will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
There will no longer be death, or sorrow, or crying, or pain. For the former things have already passed away.

As written there, the Returning Messiah is the one who brings such things into reality.

Just as he did in North Korea and South Korea, Sun Myung Moon may say that the incident in the United States also occurred because he was carrying out the practice of restoration, which had been God’s hope for six thousand years, and therefore being imprisoned under the laws of the satanic world was within the providential schedule of the Principle.

If that is so, then according to the Principle, after taking a virgin as a bride and holding the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” and giving birth to sinless children, why is it that among those children there are those who have died in a traffic accident or in other ways, and others [for example Hyo-jin] who are the source of various unfavorable rumors in the world?

Those who believe in Sun Myung Moon distort and propagandize such obvious facts instead of questioning why these things occur. Because of this, I believe that Sun Myung Moon’s future is instead heading in an increasingly irreversible direction.

As someone who directly witnessed from close by the acts that Sun Myung Moon was carrying out under the claim of practicing the Principle, I wish to make those facts clear.

Is Sun Myung Moon the Returning Messiah?

Or else, I believe the time has come to clarify whether he is simply a money-seeking opportunist with an unusual fondness for women.

The grounds on which Sun Myung Moon claims to have been restored to a position equal to God are cited as two things: first, that the holy mother, Chong Deuk-eun, gave birth to Sun Myung Moon as the Returning Messiah; and second, that on the night before Easter, April 17, when Sun Myung Moon was sixteen years old, Jesus appeared in a dream and said, “I was unable to complete the mission of restoration that I had to accomplish. I ask you, in my place, to fulfill the mission of the Returning Messiah as the Third Adam.” (This is also clearly recorded in the Unification Church’s newspaper.)

If, as claimed, Sun Myung Moon had carried out the mission of restoration as the embodied reality of God, then the Garden of Eden at the time of creation should have been restored, and the members of the Unification Church should be living happily with the True Parents, without tears.

165

Sex under the pretext of pikareum “restoration” (復歸)

First, let us think starting from the issue of the restoration of the Six Marys.

It is said that because Eve was taken away by Satan, God’s anger continued for as long as six thousand years.

God sent Jesus, the Second Adam, into the world to reclaim Eve, but Mary, Jesus’ mother, only thought of Jesus as her son and did not realize that her son was born to have sex with his mother first. Therefore, she did not have sex with Jesus.

(Note – In the Divine Principle, this act of a mother and son having sex is called “mother-son cooperation.”)

Because of this, the Principle explains that Jesus had no choice but to die on the cross. Furthermore, the original text explains that Jesus was supposed to appease God’s wrath by taking back Mary Magdalene, who was Judas Iscariot’s lover, but Judas, out of jealousy, did not cooperate and betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, leading to Jesus’ death on the cross.

I understood that if Jesus had restored the six women, known as Marys, as he intended, then the restoration principle would have been put into practice.

However, even after restoring the six Marys, Sun Myung Moon restored dozens of other women, seemingly at random.

For example, Han Chung-hwa, a dormitory supervisor at Ewha Womans University, was restored by Sun Myung Moon, but eventually fell into the trap of sexual manipulation, quit her job, and became subservient to him.

Around this time, when I was with Sun Myung Moon in Jeonju on business, I witnessed him meeting a beautiful woman and restoring her. That woman was Han Chung-hwa.

Professor Han Chung-hwa’s son, Samuel, at the Cheongpa-dong church in Seoul. It is most probable that the woman is his mother.

Han Chung-hwa was a fervent Christian who, after becoming a widow, lived diligently while raising a mute child named Samuel. Deceived by the Principle, she believed and even rejoiced in the idea that offering her own body to Sun Myung Moon was God’s will.

However, when she learned that Sun Myung Moon was engaging in restoration with another woman, she immediately returned to Seoul and not only broke with Sun Myung Moon, but also underwent uterine surgery, saying that the place had been defiled.

Regretting her own careless actions up to that point and the fact that she had lost her chastity to Sun Myung Moon, who was obsessed with sex, she died not long afterward.

Who was responsible for this, and whose sin can this be said to be?

In 1955, five professors at Ewha Womans University were pressured into leaving and submitted their resignations. Fourteen students were expelled from the university at the same time. This incident was also entangled with restoration affairs involving Sun Myung Moon, professors, and students.

However, even before that, during the Sujeong-dong in Busan period, the six Marys had already been determined, and the practice of sex had already been completed. Despite that, problems arose because attempts were made to restore yet more new Marys.

And because only the idea of “restoration” was passed along through the mouths of female members who did not think deeply about it, and because women who did not know the Principle in detail became desperately focused solely on receiving restoration, the situation developed in that way.

Regarding the Unification Church in such a state, rumors spread widely outside that in the Unification Church people strip naked and dance, and once you join, you are anesthetized so that you can never come back again.

167

Many families were destroyed

Thus, by hearing Sun Myung Moon’s account of the Principle, and by hearing the Principle of the Fall and the Principle of Restoration, changes were brought about in the lives of people who had come from all walks of life.

Couples who had previously lived peacefully together with their children experienced conflict after the wife joined the Unification Church, because she refused to undress and also refused to have sex with her husband.

These people even agonized over the financial matters of what they were to offer to Sun Myung Moon.

As a result, they eventually divorced, and family life collapsed in accordance with Sun Myung Moon’s Principle.

In families without much of an economic foundation, when only the husbands became members and despaired of converting their wives, they abandoned their children and left home.

At that time, Kim In-cheol, who was the head of external affairs of the Unification Church, had as one of his major tasks the sending of these abandoned children to orphanages.

Families that were destroyed in this way numbered as many as 170 households, to the extent that I personally know.

At that time, although they had received restoration from Sun Myung Moon, women who, after seeing and experiencing Sun Myung Moon’s behavior, thought that it was not God’s work but merely actions driven by obsession with sex, returned to their families while pretending ignorance toward their husbands.

What must the state of mind of these women be like now?

Female members who knew these facts nevertheless devoted everything and continued to serve.

At that time, I once received a question from a male member of the Unification Church.
“Sun Myung Moon’s restoration must be something truly solemn, right?”

At the time, I replied with a smile, “Of course, since he is God,” but although it would be natural to imagine that the ritual of restoration by the Returning Messiah would be solemn, the reality was different.

Sun Myung Moon, who should have been God, was like a dog smacking its lips at appetizing prey, engaging in sex as if quenching hunger. He was nothing but a mass of sexual desire.

In fact, Sun Myung Moon was said to have had such great sexual stamina that he did it as many as ten times in a single night.

Since this was said by his lawful wife, Choi Seon-gil, there can be no mistake about it.

The same was true of the female members when they received restoration. Because they were pure women, it is understandable, but they were sprawled out at will and soon utterly exhausted.

Some women even screamed loudly and fainted.

Since I personally took care of them, I can say this too is an undeniable fact.

Although Sun Myung Moon’s makes claims restoration is to remove satanic blood [original sin], in the end it is no different in any way from the sex of the satanic world.

The women who quickly perceived Sun Myung Moon’s true nature and returned to their families were truly wise. They were able to prevent enormous further damage.

169

The resentment of a woman brings frost even in summer

Yet Sun Myung Moon now claims that he has become the returning Messiah, the “True Father”, while providing absolutely no support to the members who were “restored.”

Having come to reign as the “True Father” abroad, especially in Japan and the United States, he has caused major social problems in Japan by raising money through the so-called “spiritual sales” 霊感商法 (reikan shōhō).

He does not even spare a glance for those who have been sacrificed up to now.

The number of women who leave the Unification Church while harboring resentment toward Sun Myung Moon is increasing day by day.

By what method, and with what principle, does Sun Myung Moon intend to resolve this problem in the future?

He produced and distributed 350,000 copies of Divine Principle video tapes to American pastors. Will that prevent this?

Even if American pastors travel around the world under the pretext of Divine Principle seminars, spending hundreds of millions of won on proselytizing, such things will not be prevented.

He is trying to elevate himself, Sun Myung Moon, as the returning Messiah and Savior by paying high manuscript fees to famous scholars in Japan, the United States, and Korea. However, one must not forget the Korean proverb: “A woman’s resentment brings frost even in the height of summer” (note: this refers to the lunar calendar, so May and June are midsummer).

The women who were “restored” by Sun Myung Moon in their youth poured in all their property, were divorced by their husbands, separated from their children, and have now grown completely old.

These women were once wives from well-to-do households, affluent enough to employ housemaids, but after welcoming the “Returning Lord,” Sun Myung Moon, and giving everything to him, they are now so destitute that they must work as maids themselves just to survive. There are dozens of such people.

Moreover, there must be several hundred people who have spent their entire lives harboring resentment. I thought about meeting each and every one of these women, but due to my financial circumstances and various other problems, I was unable to do so, and I truly feel ashamed about that.

Children born to virgins

I believe I have already spoken about the selection of the virgin who becomes the True Mother, which is regarded as the most important matter in the Divine Principle. The woman who holds the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” with Sun Myung Moon, who calls himself the True Father, is said to become the True Mother, and through that ritual, the Garden of Eden is restored to its pre-Fall state, thereby fulfilling God’s purpose of creation.

After uprooting original sin from the very root of human society, the world is returned to a clean, sinless state, a world without suffering or death, where people can live eternally attending the True Parents. This is what the Divine Principle teaches.

However, in the process of selecting this one virgin who becomes the True Mother, many incomprehensible problems also arise. When Sun Myung Moon was in Pyongyang, Kim Chong-hwa, the wife of Cheong Myeong-seon and the mother of three children, was being prepared as the partner for the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb,” when she was arrested together with Sun Myung Moon.

I have written several times that Sun Myung Moon was sentenced to five years in prison and served his term in the Heungnam prison until the Korean war enabled him to leave the prison.

At Shin Seong-muk’s home in Yeongdo, Busan, Moon “restored” a virgin named Kim Myung-hee, but afterwards he continued the relationship, and Kim Myung-hee became pregnant.

A pregnant Kim Myung-hee with Kim Young-oon holding the umbrella.

In order to conceal this fact, Sun Myung Moon staged a false romance between Kim Myung-hee and a university student named Oh Seung-taek. The two of them smuggled themselves to Japan. In Tokyo, Kim Myung-hee gave birth to Sun Myung Moon’s son, Hee-jin, in August 1955. They lived at the very bottom of poverty.

Furthermore, he also “restored” a virgin named Choi Soon-wha, causing her to give birth to a son [in January 1966, Sam Park was born in the US].

After coming to Seoul, as in the case of the six Marys, Sun Myung Moon, under the pretext of selecting a virgin bride, “restored” Choi Soon-shil at an inn in front of Seoul Station. The accomplice at that time was Kim Soon-cheol.
Choi Soon-shil thereafter believed that she was the first candidate to be the True Mother.

[Moon planned to hold the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” with Choi Soon-shil in about October 1959, before his 40th birthday. Before the number 40 was very important to him. Choi Soon-shil left the Unification Church before the marriage and Moon “was beyond furious”. He quickly chose Hak Ja Han. He did not have to ask her father for permission to marry her, as required in Korean law at the time, because she was the child of a single mother.]

Kim Soon-cheol incited Choi Soon-shil and, as a token proving that she had been selected and restored as the bride and True Mother, made a gold ring and gave it to this pitiful young woman.

Then Sun Myung Moon abandoned all of these virgins and held the “Marriage of the Lamb” with Hak-ja Han, the daughter of Hong Soon-ae, marrying her while proclaiming that Hak-ja Han was the True Mother.

Now, among the many publications related to the Unification Church, Sun Myung Moon is presented as the True Father and Hak-ja Han as the True Mother, living together and aiming to create a new world. Mobilizing many organizations and vast economic power, they exalt Sun Myung Moon as a savior – the man who was once imprisoned – making various preparations to highlight Sun Myung Moon as the returning Messiah.

Is the Unification Church a heretical religion? This question is ‘no touch’
— Leader Moon of the Christian Unification Church arrested on charges of illegal confinement [of a Yonsei University female student].

Sun Myung Moon (文鮮明), aged thirty-six, the leader of the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity (世界基督教統一神靈協會), which once caused considerable controversy in religious circles, was taken into custody by the Public Security Bureau on the 4th on charges including draft evasion and illegal confinement.

This association had stirred turmoil in religious circles over the question of whether it should be regarded as an orthodox religion or a heretical one, and because individuals were said to have believed in this group, students at Ewha Womans University (梨大) were even expelled, causing social controversy at the time. With the arrest of its leader, the matter has once again drawn public attention.

According to police investigations, Moon maintains his registered place of origin in Pyongyang and is said to have fled south during the January–Fourth Retreat [in 1951 during the Korean War]. He allegedly failed to complete military service registration procedures, and is reported to have increased his stated age from the mid-thirties to forty-three. It is further alleged that he illegally confined a female believer, Moon Young-il (pseudonym), aged 22 who was a [Yonsei] university student, for three days or more, during which time he attempted to coerce her into adopting the faith.

However, according to officials of the Public Security Bureau, the arrest and interrogation of Moon are being handled strictly as violations of the general criminal code, and with regard to matters of doctrine or theology, they stated that they would absolutely take a “no touch” approach.

The behavior of the “Son of God”
Numerous Women Deceived
The behavior of Moon, the leader of the Unification Church, attracts attention.

Brief report [Following the earlier July 6 report] – With the arrest of its leader, the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity (Unification Church) has abruptly become a topic of public discussion and has been effectively “shut down.” What, then, is the true nature of this organization, and did Mr. Moon in fact violate even the chastity of female believers? The charges uncovered by the authorities are limited to two points: “draft evasion” and “illegal confinement” [for three days. The person was a 22 year-old female Yonsei university student, Choi Soon-shil who was starved by Moon.*] However, when various pieces of information surrounding Mr. Moon and his church are compiled —

◊ Doctrine and Method of Preaching – In this church, doctrine is preached to newly joined believers over seventy-two hours (a full three days). The sermons are delivered by the leader, Mr. Moon, and continue every week from Monday at 10 a.m. until Thursday at 10 a.m.

If, during the sermons, a believer comes to harbor doubts about Mr. Moon’s doctrinal preaching and wishes to leave, Mr. Moon, in a solemn tone, says, “If you leave, you will die,” thereby preventing the person from leaving. Mr. Moon also preaches that “the Korean people are the people chosen by God, and Pyongyang is the Jerusalem of the world,” and proclaims that “he himself is the son of God, and if one has physical relations with him, one will give birth to a savior [child without sin].”

◊ Lewd Conduct – Mr. Moon, an eloquent speaker, is said to have lured women identified as devout believers to locations other than his own quarters (a small room within the association) and violated their chastity.
Four women who can be definitively identified as victims are middle-aged married women in their thirties or older, whose families belong to the middle class or above. One of them, Mrs. Kim Soon-chang (pseudonym), aged 36, had been the lady in charge of a well-to-do upper-class household, but after becoming a sacrifice to Leader Moon, she came to face the fate of being abandoned by her husband.

◊ The Financial Situation of the Association – The current association building is rented. Although they receive donations from approximately 250 believers (in Seoul), the amounts are small. Therefore, they mass-produce “bromide” photographs of city and other scenes and sell them throughout the city.

◊ The Status of the Organization – There are branches in Busan, Daegu and elsewhere, and the headquarters is in Seoul. Concerning the number of followers, a total of 700 attend at dawn. 250 of these have attained a grade. The level of education is to quite a high standard. Looking at the gender balance, there are about equal numbers of men and women.

* Some of these details were reported in the July 6 edition of the Dong-A Ilbo.

Mr. Tahk Myeong-hwan had internal UC / FFWPU documents which demonstrated that the number of churches and members were far lower than claimed by the church, which presented false statistics to the public.

Six individuals arrested and sent to the prosecutor — Leader Moon and other members of the ‘Unification Church’.

As previously reported, the so-called “Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity Case” (世界基督敎神靈統一協會事件), which has been under investigation by the National Police Bureau, has now reached an initial conclusion. On the 13th, six related individuals were sent under arrest to the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office, together with one set of case documents.

At present, those involved in this case are being interrogated on charges including violation of the Military Service Act, forgery of documents, and violation of the National Security Act. However, according to one investigative official, in addition to these charges, seven cases of adultery between the leader Moon and female followers have been confirmed. It is therefore anticipated that a new investigation into adultery offenses will be launched.

As of now, however, no formal complaints have been filed by the husbands of the women involved. Since adultery is a crime prosecuted only upon complaint by the injured party (a “crime subject to private prosecution”), the investigation cannot presently proceed on those grounds.

Furthermore, whether these alleged adultery cases are legally established is expected to provide a criterion for determining whether the group constitutes a “heretical religion.” Accordingly, close attention is being paid to the future direction of the prosecution’s investigation.

Uncovering the origins of founder Sun Myung Moon

The father of Chairman Soon-yeong Choi was Seong-mo Choi who was caught by a Unification Church ‘Honey Trap’ ploy.

This comes from the lips of Mr. Soon-yeong Choi who owns nine related businesses, including Korea Life Insurance, and is influential in the Korean business community. He spoke about the stark realities of the almost forceful missionary work done in the early days of the Unification Church and reveals what was the “modus operandi of cajoling rich men” used by the Unification Church. He shares that with us only now that time has passed.

“My family has been torn apart”

extracts:

Seong-mo Choi, the father of Soon-yeong Choi, made a fortune from manufacturing flour from before World War II. After the war, he founded Korean Flour Milling (now East Asia Flour Mills). That laid the foundation for the new East Asia Group which acquired a number of companies, including Korea Life. Since his father’s death 17 years ago, the eldest son, Soon-yeong, took over and has led the business to the present time. …

In addition Deuk-sam Lee, the wife of Seong-mo Choi and was the mother of Soon-yeong Choi and his two sisters, were rumored to “be the women in the story of “three women having pikareum sex with Sun Myung Moon,” an account made in documents by anti-Unification Church movements.”

… I have already given three reports in this magazine, exploring the roots of the Unification Church. The Ewha Women’s University incident of 1955, which I reported on, was a major scandal. (See the October 15th issue of the Weekly Post.) Rev Sun Myung Moon himself was arrested on suspicion of “illegal detention (of a female college student).”

Related to this major scandal of the early days of the Unification Church, a 22-year-old female college student was arrested. The name of this student is Soon-shil Choi. In other words, it was the sister of Chairman Soon-yeong Choi.

… During the Korean War, in the early 50s, the forces of Kim Il-Sung came south and occupied Seoul. The Choi family evacuated to Busan, as did many others. Soon-yeong was also in Busan with his mother, Deuk-sam Lee. She was an ardent Christian and gave huge donations to the Christian church which she attended regularly. This became a hot topic on the war-torn streets.
Of course, the money all came from her husband, Seong-mo Choi. The Unification Church was poor at the time, and scrambled to try to recruit Seong-mo Choi. His son, Soon-yeong, was a boy just over 10 years old.

“My father hated the Unification Church. However, my mother had set foot in the Unification Church. Next my sister, Soon-wha, joined and subsequently my sister Soon-shil did also. Then it was my turn. My mother encouraged me to join. But I was like my father, I hated the Unification Church. So I resisted it quite hard. My mother then started discriminating against me and I was no longer cared for. My sisters had side dishes at dinner, but I did not. There were many such things.”

The Unification Church was focusing their sights onto the rich Choi family as their target. They had already succeeded in recruiting three women. Soon-yeong said: “At the time, Sun Myung Moon was at the apex of the Unification Church and early founders were given high rank, but my mother, who had just joined, was also given a position among them.

In other words, to sit at such a high seat, you would need to give a lot of money. That was the reasoning behind it. My mother dedicated all the money to the Unification Church, and was constantly quarreling with my father. The impoverished Unification Church not only stole from my family, but took money from other rich families. Any means was acceptable for the purpose. It was really vulgar. They thought nothing of taking all the money from an innocent couple even if it caused the family to fall apart.”

It was Soon-yeong Choi who used the words “really vulgar,” and he said them with vehemence.

When the war ended, the Choi family returned to Seoul and was then hit by the Ewha Womans University incident. In July 1955, Sun Myung Moon and four Unification Church leaders and a 22 year-old first year college student from Yonsei University were arrested on suspicion of “mediating adultery.” This college student was Soon-shil Choi.

Yesterday the first trial was held in the ‘Unification Church’ case

The first hearing at the Seoul District Court in the case concerning Sun Myung Moon (文鮮明), leader of the Unification Church (real name: Moon Yong-myung [文龍明], age 36), was held yesterday (the 20th) at 10:30 a.m.in Courtroom No. 4 of the Seoul District Court. The session was presided over by Judge Yoon Hak-ro (尹學老), with Prosecutor Kang Seo-yong (姜瑞龍) participating. On this day, the courtroom was packed with a large number of women believed to be followers of the Unification Church.

Moon, the defendant, who had previously been the subject of much public attention due to reports of numerous adultery allegations, appeared in court only as a defendant charged with violation of the Military Service Act. The adultery-related matters were not brought before the court because no formal complaints had been filed by the parties concerned with respect to the adultery allegations.

Along with Moon, the following individuals affiliated with the same church also appeared before the bench:

• Kim Won-pil (金元弼), age 28 — Violation of the Military Service Act (age increased by six years)
• Eu Hyo-won (劉孝元), age 42 — Failure to report for military registration
• Eu Hyo-min (劉孝敏), age 36 — Same charge as above
• Eu Hyo-yeong (劉孝永), age 35 — Same charge as above

The hearing proceeded with the prosecution’s reading of the indictment, followed by examination of the facts.

On that day, Moon admitted to having increased his stated age. However, with regard to the legal question of whether increasing one’s age constitutes a violation of the Military Service Act even when the individual has already exceeded the draft-eligible age (32–33 years and above), it was noted that there exist two differing legal interpretations within legal circles.

In the indictment, Prosecutor Kang pointed out that Moon had increased his age and evaded military service based on his Christian belief that one should not shed blood or take life.

Who was the traitor?

A letter of introduction from Sun Myung Moon

Next, I intend to write about the internal circumstances of the economic problems. As I wrote earlier, when I came up to Seoul in 1953, even if I wanted to go from Daegu to Busan, I did not have enough money for a third-class train fare, and I was in a situation where I could barely make a round trip with money given me by female members.

After that, we leased a house in Bukhak-dong, Seoul, founded the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, and, at Eu Hyo-min’s suggestion, began producing and selling bromide photographs.
This venture succeeded and brought economic stability, so the church was moved to Heungin-dong. The number of members gradually increased, and the Unification Church prospered.

That year (1955), because of the July 4 Incident (the Ewha Womans University expulsion and dismissal case), Sun Myung Moon and five leaders were arrested and put on trial. After Sun Myung Moon was released from prison, a Japanese-style two-story house was purchased in Cheongpa-dong (where the Unification Church headquarters is now located), and the headquarters church was moved there.

The Cheongpa-dong church – which was the headquarters church up to the 1990s.

After that, Sun Myung Moon said to me, “You have worked hard, so go and rest for a while at the Seojin Mine,” and gave me a letter of introduction, with which I went to the Seojin Mine. In July 1956, I became, without ever having imagined it, the person in charge of the mine and spent several months there.

This Seojin Mine had been donated by Jeong Seok-cheon, a Unification Church leader, and became the property of Sun Myung Moon, and was a mine he himself was operating directly. I will write about this again later.

While I was at the mine, Eu Hyo-min invented a pellet air rifle and obtained a patent for it. When this air rifle was produced on a trial basis, its performance turned out to be quite good, so it was put into full-scale production and sale, thereby solidifying the economic foundation of the Unification Church.

174

The relentless exploitation of labor

At that time, the first of Sun Myung Moon’s relatives to enter the Unification Church was Moon Seong-gyun, who came in as a driver when Sun Myung Moon purchased a jeep. The next was Moon Yong-seon, who was working at a pottery factory in Asan operated by Elder Jeong Seok-cheon. Other than these two, there were no other relatives of Sun Myung Moon involved.

Before that, when I was working diligently together with Sun Myung Moon, there was not a single one of Sun Myung Moon’s relatives, and I had never even heard their names. However, now the situation has become one in which Sun Myung Moon’s relatives control the finances of the Unification Church, and even internally there are loud voices of dissatisfaction being raised.
This goes against the Divine Principle.

Sun Myung Moon had long been telling the members that all the money and property in this world belong to God, so even if they stole their husbands’ money and offered it to him as a donation, it would not be a sin. And if possible, he said that even if they stole money from banks and spent it on us, it would be a crime under the laws of this world, but not a sin under God’s law.

Because of this, the female members felt not the slightest pang of conscience and secretly took money from their husbands’ wallets and poured it all into Sun Myung Moon. It would not be an exaggeration to say that today’s Unification Church exists because of this.

Now, into the place where the members struggled and suffered to build an economic foundation, Sun Myung Moon’s relatives have jumped in, manipulating the finances and spending freely while living in luxury. On the other hand, the people who suffered in the earliest stages to build that economic foundation have almost all either left or been driven out.

At present, among the people from that time who remain and hold economic positions, there are only President Lee Soo-kyung, who went on to become president of Ilseong General Construction and then moved last year (1992) to Ilshin Stone, and President Kim Won-pil of Ilhwa Foods. Lee Soo-kyung was only about eighteen years old at the time, so he knew nothing at all about Sun Myung Moon’s activities behind the scenes.

Also, Kim Won-pil, who was about twenty-two years old when he came south together with us from the North, was a loyal confidant who would have died at any time if Sun Myung Moon had told him to do so.

Eu Hyo-min at the time

It was around the time when the manufacture of air rifles began. Children aged about fifteen or sixteen, whose families had been shattered because their mothers had joined the church and who had been sent to orphanages and raised there, were put to work at the air-rifle manufacturing plant of Tongil Industries Co., located in Sutaek-ri. (At that time, the president of Tongil Industries was Kim In-cheol.)

The number of such children was about 350, yet they worked from morning until evening and were paid only 500 won per month. (Converted into Japanese yen, this amounted to only about 100 yen at the time, in 1965.) This was an outrageous example of labor exploitation that simply defies reason.

At one point, the seventeen-year-old son of Deacon Kim Hee-ok, who has since passed away, ran away from the orphanage and came to the Unification Church looking for his mother. Then this mother and son came to find me while I was engaged in housing construction work in Seoul, and said that the son could no longer remain at Tongil Industries because it was unbearable, and asked, “Could you not employ him, Mr. Pak?”

The son had been working at Tongil Industries, but the exploitation was so severe that he could not endure it and ran away. I heard this story while employing the boy as a worker, so there is no doubt about it.

176

Mr. Moon’s sons, Heung-jin and Hyo-jin

In 1983, Sun Myung Moon returned from the United States and gave lectures in Seoul and six other cities. At that time, Sun Myung Moon’s son Moon Heung-jin died in a traffic accident.

[Heung-jin was driving too fast on an icy road and hit a stationary truck. Alcohol may have been involved. Heung-jin did drink, as did Hyo-jin and others.]

As for the reason, the Unification Church explained that while Reverend Sun Myung Moon was giving anti-communist speeches, Satan had been aiming to kill Reverend Sun Myung Moon, but instead his son Moon Heung-jin died in his father’s place.

And since Reverend Sun Myung Moon appointed that son as the Supreme Commander of the Youth of the Spirit World, it was announced that he would descend to the earth together with the youths of the spirit world and assist and cooperate in Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s activities as the Returning Messiah.

Already there is nothing to do but wait for God to resolve everything, yet there is an afterword to this story. (To be discussed later.) Sun Myung Moon and his wife Han Hak-ja are said to reign in this world as the True Father and True Mother, and the children born between the two of them should, according to the Divine Principle, be without sin or defilement. Yet some suddenly died in traffic accidents, and bad rumors were circulating that they behaved no differently from children of the satanic world.

Sun Myung Moon and Hak-Ja Han (left). Husband and wife with their son, Hyo-jin Moon in the center.

The scandals involving Moon Hyo-jin, born of those True Parents, became an issue not only within the Unification Church but also socially, as various rumors spread.

Regarding this, the Unification Church says that their son Moon Hyo-jin repented by engaging in forty days of fasting and all-night prayer during the depths of winter on sacred holy ground designated by Reverend Sun Myung Moon, and that through this his character was purified.

Moon Hyo-jin is the eldest son of Sun Myung Moon and Han Hak-ja, and if one reads Moon Hyo-jin’s poetry collection titled Successful People, published by Seonghwa Press, it becomes clear that there is a movement to establish him as the successor to his father, Sun Myung Moon. This too is an incomprehensible issue.

At present, in Pyongyang, Kim Il-sung appears to be trying to hand over his regime to his son Kim Jong-il. The hereditary succession of power under a communist system is an unbelievable outrage, yet within the world of the Unification faction, the same kind of hereditary system is being openly followed, with an attempt to pass the authority of the Returning Messiah on to his son Moon Hyo-jin.

Will Dr. Kim Eun-woo, who wrote a book titled Only Reverend Sun Myung Moon Can Save This World, now change the title and publish a book called Only Reverend Moon Hyo-jin Can Save This World?

And will the Japanese writer Kiyoshi Nasu 那須聖 change the title of Sun Myung Moon, the Savior in Prison to Moon Hyo-jin, the Savior of Youth?

I heard such talk from someone.

It was during the time when the second generation of families who had received the Blessing were holding a forty-day gathering at the Cheongpyeong Prayer Center.

About 150 people were in attendance, hosted by Moon Hyo-jin. Pastor Lee Yo-han of the 36 Blessed Couples, who had long been respected by the members, was speaking about the Divine Principle, when suddenly Moon Hyo-jin appeared and, in front of the people gathered at the meeting, pulled Pastor Lee Yo-han down and became extremely angry, saying that he was speaking about something different from the Principle written by his father, Sun Myung Moon.

It is said that the members who were gathered there remarked that he had perhaps reverted to his original delinquent nature from before his repentance, despite being the successor of Sun Myung Moon.

North Korea has become a laughingstock around the world because Kim Il-sung is trying to hand over his regime to his son Kim Jong-il. Alongside that, the idea that in Korea as well, Sun Myung Moon of the Unification Church would hand over the qualifications and authority of the Returning Messiah to his own son seems laughable no matter how one thinks about it.

Up to now, the Unification Church has promoted Sun Myung Moon as the Returning Messiah using enormous amounts of money.

As concrete examples of this, many books have been published, such as The Savior Arrives (1984) and The Savior in Prison (1985), written by the Japanese author Kiyoshi Nasu (April 1916 – June 2017).

I do not know whether Kiyoshi Nasu received money or not, but judging from the nature of the Unification Church, they would likely spend large sums of money if necessary to create a pretext for handing over full authority to the son.

However, as far as I know, nowhere in the Principle does it say that if Sun Myung Moon is the Returning Messiah, that role of the Returning Messiah is to be inherited by his son.

When one looks at these aspects of the Unification Church, it is frightening how, depending on convenience at the moment, they arbitrarily attach justifications and casually carry out things that defy common sense, violate basic human ethics, and above all, contradict the very Divine Principle that is supposed to be held as most precious.

178

The name of one of the founders erased

Moreover, the Unification Church calmly rewrites history and records falsehoods. From the earliest days of the Unification Church, it has not only expelled without compensation many members who believed in Sun Myung Moon for a long time and worked with all their strength for him, but it has also arbitrarily branded them as satanic, stripped them of their honor and pride, and turned them into criminals labeled as traitors.

I know many such people, but since giving examples would be endless, I will introduce only a few of them.

First, I will describe the matter concerning myself, Pak Chung-hwa.

If one looks at the record about me in The History of the Unification Church (Volume I), it is written as follows:
When Pak Chung-hwa was alone in an empty house where only a dog remained at his older sister’s home, Kim Won-pil came to visit him, put the injured Pak Chung-hwa, who was dragging his injured leg, on a bicycle, and together with Sun Myung Moon they fled south. Later, during the period at the Seojin Mine, Pak Chung-hwa betrayed that teacher and left the Unification Church.

Thus, in the records of the Unification Church, Pak Chung-hwa is described as a traitor. If I were to speak plainly, I would say: what kind of nonsense is this? This is a false record concocted to tightly conceal all the truth and to idolize Sun Myung Moon.

Therefore, here I intend to set down the true circumstances.

First, to summarize the main points so far: as explained in detail in the account of the escape from the North (Chapter 2), I abandoned my family and, while wounded and injured, flogged my own body and came down to the South together with Sun Myung Moon.

It was to keep the promise we made in prison to share hardship and joy together for life.

After that, I endured indescribable hardships helping Sun Myung Moon with economic matters. I dealt with the various conflicts that arose from Sun Myung Moon’s sexual relations with married women under the name of “restoration,” and I lived on while bearing layer upon layer of hardship.

During the seven years I was together with Sun Myung Moon, I was twice subjected to electric shock torture by the police.

At the greatest crisis, the July 4 Incident in 1955, when five leaders were arrested, I employed every possible means in response to the authorities’ relentless interrogations to conceal Sun Myung Moon’s crimes and to work toward his acquittal. Yet in the Unification Church’s records it is written that Sun Myung Moon, who had committed no crimes, was arrested but found not guilty; however, as described earlier, the truth is that it was due to the efforts of the members.

The Unification Church devoted itself to the deification of Sun Myung Moon, but if I, who lived together with him for one year and six months in prison and then for seven years from Sujeong-dong in Busan to Cheongpa-dong in Seoul, serving as his right-hand man, am able to say, Sun Myung Moon’s character was not divine in the least. Rather, he was extreme in joy and anger, and what stood out most was his asceticism combined with lechery. He truly was a man of the satanic world.

Sun Myung Moon, who was weak in spirit, was always inclined to avoid people whenever someone came looking for him. Around the time I first underwent torture by the police, and he would fidget in anxiety. So I would go out in his place and hear what the matter was.

He looked so small and frail, almost like a weakling. How could someone who claimed to restore this satanic world into a clean and pure one, and to revive the original Garden of Eden, be so flustered and helpless like that? I asked Sun Myung Moon several times whether it was possible to restore the universe or the world through such behavior.

After enduring various hardships, in a house in Bukhak-dong, Seoul, which had been rented under my name, we founded the “Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity.”

This took place on May 3, 1954. Yet here again, for some reason, the Unification Church has altered the date and announced it as May 1.

The leaders present at that time were Sun Myung Moon, Lee Chang-hwan, Pak Chung-hwa, Eu Hyo-won, Eu Hyo-min, and Kim Sang-cheol, six people in total, and these six came to be called the founders of the Unification Church.

However, in current publications related to the Unification Church, the name Pak Chung-hwa does not appear at all. They branded me, the longest-standing member, as a “traitor” and have erased me.

“When an incident occurs, flee immediately”

In fact, it was completely different. The betrayer was Sun Myung Moon himself.

This happened when I was at the Seojin Mine.

One day while I was working at Seojin Mine, Cho Dong-seok came to visit and said that an incident had occurred in Seoul, that the teacher had fled, and that Sun Myung Moon had instructed him to go straight to Pak Chung-hwa at the mine and tell him to flee immediately to another place.

It seemed he had given instructions that if the police went as far as the mine, arrested Pak Chung-hwa, and subjected him to interrogation and severe torture, and if Pak Chung-hwa were to confess matters concerning him, it would be a serious problem.

After hearing this story, I wondered where I should flee. It was obvious that even the mountains were dangerous, and of course the church in Seoul and the homes of the members were also risky. After thinking through various possibilities, I decided that first I should meet Sun Myung Moon and discuss with him how I ought to conduct myself.

I asked Cho Dong-seok about the teacher’s whereabouts, and he said that Sun Myung Moon had taken a jeep and gone to a temple called Yonghwasa in Chungmu. Hearing this, I immediately decided to go there. I borrowed travel money from Jeon Jong-man, the explosives supervisor who lived in the mountains near the mine, and set out, arriving in Chungmu at midnight. Because the curfew had begun, I could not go as far as Yonghwasa that day. With no choice, I found lodging and stayed the night, and early the next morning I went to Yonghwasa.

But truly by a narrow margin, Sun Myung Moon, together with Elder Song Do-uk, Jo Il-cheong, Song Byeong-ho, and one other, had already departed in the direction of Jeju Island. In the temple courtyard, only the clear tire tracks of the jeep that Sun Myung Moon and the others had ridden remained.

Where should I go? How long should I endure this, and in what way? What should I do from now on? The future looked utterly bleak. At a loss as to what to do, I avoided people’s eyes, stayed on guard against the police, and went to Seoul. Then I arranged for word to be passed to Sun Myung Moon that I was hiding here and waiting for contact. I waited earnestly for word from Sun Myung Moon, but even after a month passed, no contact came at all.

During that time, I lived in a filthy makeshift lodging near Seoul Station where laborers stayed, chewing on a single piece of bread a day.

The traitor is Sun Myung Moon

Even after waiting more than a month, there was still no word from Sun Myung Moon. I began to harbor suspicious thoughts, finding it strange. I had gone to the Seojin Mine on March 28, 1956. Sun Myung Moon, who had been arrested in the July 4 Incident, had been declared not guilty on October 4 of the previous year, about nine months earlier. At first there had been seven or eight miners, and necessary operating expenses had been remitted by Sun Myung Moon.

Around that time, when I went to the headquarters in Cheongpa-dong, Seoul, I was introduced by Sun Myung Moon to two army officers who were said to have newly joined the church. They were Pak Bo-hi and Han Sang-guk. At that time, Sun Myung Moon introduced me to them, saying, “Pak Chung-hwa has been my right-hand man from the very beginning, my number-two man. You should learn many things from Pak Chung-hwa.”

It was much later that I learned that both of these men became close aides of Kim Jong-pil, who became the first director of the KCIA (Korean Central Intelligence Agency) following the military coup carried out by General Park Chung-hee in 1961, three years later. It seems that two more military men also joined, but I did not meet them.

Later, Pak Bo-hi went to the United States and became active there, rising to the position of second-in-command of the Unification Church. And both of these men received the Blessing as part of the 36 Couples.

Not long after that, the remittances from Sun Myung Moon suddenly stopped altogether. No matter how much I requested them or waited, no money was sent.

From the beginning the operation had been running at a deficit, and since there were no funds, continuing the mine development was impossible, so the work was halted and the miners were sent back.

Those remained were only Kim Deok-jin from Seoul and three female members who had come from Daegu to help. For a while we endured by skipping meals, but before long we were completely destitute and even began missing meals altogether.

Suffering from extreme poverty, the woman who cooked our meals eventually went back to Daegu. (It seems she later left the church.)

Kim Deok-jin also left the church and moved to Seoul, and I alone remained, with only Jeon Jong-man, the explosives supervisor who lived in the same village, occasionally coming by to visit.

In that situation, an incident occurred. Cho Dong-seok came as a messenger from Sun Myung Moon, telling me that it was dangerous and that I should flee immediately.

If I were to run away from here, there would be no one left at all. Before departing for Chungmu, I decided at least to finish settling things and cleaning up properly. I gave one engine to the explosives supervisor and secured travel expenses.

Much later I learned that this incident, too, had been caused by yet another complicated entanglement surrounding Sun Myung Moon and women.

While I was struggling in the mountain mine for several years, barely able to obtain food, the Unification Church expanded into the United States and also established the Unification Church in Japan (October 2, 1959). Moreover, on April 11, 1960, Sun Myung Moon once again married a virgin named Han Hak-ja in what was called the “Marriage of the Lamb.”

Then came the three-couple mass wedding ceremony (on April 16 of the same year), the 33-couple mass wedding ceremony (May 15, 1961), and the formation of the so-called 36 Couples organization. In principle, the brides of the 36 Couples were women whom Sun Myung Moon himself had “restored.”

Although in principle the brides of the 36 Couples were to be women restored by Sun Myung Moon, there were also existing married women among them.

Given that I knew far too much about the course of events up to that point, and knew in detail about Sun Myung Moon’s relationships with women, I must have been an uncomfortable presence to him as well. By consigning me not to island exile but to mountain exile, driving me into a situation where even my food and drink were uncertain, Sun Myung Moon was in the meantime pushing forward a principle riddled with contradictions in order to fulfill his ambitions.

At such a time, once again pursued by a women-related incident, he decided that it would be dangerous unless Pak Chung-hwa, who was at the mine, was made to flee. If the police were to torture Pak Chung-hwa again and force a confession, it would be disastrous, so he deliberately sent someone to the mine in the middle of the hottest part of summer.

Just by thinking this through, one can clearly read Sun Myung Moon’s true intention of trying to treat me as a person of the past.

Sun Myung Moon did not tell me to flee in order for me to live a long life.
He did so in order that he himself could survive for a long time, intending to lock me away in the cage of the past and make me run.

And on that very day, he blocked me so that I could not return to the inner quarters of the Unification Church, which had just newly opened. I only learned this much later; at the time, knowing nothing, I was living day to day on a single piece of bread, filling my hunger, waiting for more than a month in a cheap lodging soaked with midsummer sweat, believing that contact would come from Sun Myung Moon.

This was in August 1962.
This is fact, not falsehood.
I did not betray Sun Myung Moon.
The one who betrayed was Sun Myung Moon.
